LEED

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally-recognized green building certification system. It was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in March 2000. LEED provides building owners, operators and managers with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

LEED promotes sustainable building and development practices through a suite of rating systems that recognize projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance. The categories that make up LEED are; Site Selection, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process. It also serves as a pillar for sustainable site development, materials selection, energy efficiency, water conservation, CO2 emission reductions, and indoor environmental quality.

LEED is flexible enough to apply to all building types, residential, commercial and industrial. It applies throughout the building lifecycle, starting from design to construction, operations and maintenance, tenant improvements, and significant retrofits.

LEED® points are awarded on a 100-point scale, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts. Ten bonus credits are available, four of which address regionally specific environmental issues. A project must satisfy all prerequisites and earn a minimum number of points (26 credits) to be certified by the USGBC.

GIS – Geographic Information System/Technology Services

ECI’s services in the GIS field include GIS project consulting, technology services, data collection, spatial analyses, application development and 3D visualization.

Our experience with GIS and technology services includes work for government agencies, transportation and environmental agencies, as well as private companies. As with other services we offer, our goals and objectives are to design and implement proper and updated applications and interfaces to analyze and display geographic and environmental data. We are able to accomplish these goals and objectives through our experience from basic mapping concepts of projections and coordinate systems to geo-processing data management, custom map application development and photogrammetric services.

Carbon Footprint

Carbon Footprint is generally defined as “the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person.” Specifically it is “a measure of the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions of a defined population, system or activity, considering all relevant sources, sinks and storage within the spatial and temporal boundary of the population, system or activity of interest. Calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) using the relevant 100-year global warming potential (GWP100).”

Greenhouse gases can be emitted in several ways, through means of transportation, land development and clearance, and the production and consumption of food, fuels, manufactured goods, materials, woods, roads, buildings, and services.

A Carbon Footprint is measured by conducting a GHG emissions assessment. Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, alternative solutions can be suggested to reduce it, through technological developments, better project and product management, revised Green Pubic or Private procurement (GPP), carbon rapture, and strategies for consumption.

Carbon Footprint Management Services:

  1. The first step is to estimate and assess carbon emissions.
  2. The second step is to neutralize carbon emissions by identifying ways and means for reducing these emissions.
  3. Carbon Offsets: Once reduction has reached its limit, and subsequent to the above steps, identify alternative projects to mitigate and/or manage carbon footprints.
